Review gating is asking only happy customers for a public Google review. Here is what Google prohibits, how major platforms invite every guest, and how a private form can sit next to an open Google link.
Review gating is a collection pattern, not a star rating. You ask whether the visit went well, then you send only the promoters to Google while unhappy guests get a private form and no public path. Google treats that selective ask as misleading engagement. A 4.9 built that way is not the same as a 4.9 built from every eligible guest.
This article explains the policy line, how well-known review platforms already invite everyone, and the compliant pattern used in a Google review funnel: recover privately first, and still leave Google open if the guest wants to post.
The usual gate is a sentiment pre-check. Email, SMS, or a landing page asks "Were you satisfied?" Happy answers go to Google, TripAdvisor, or another public form. Unhappy answers stay on the business site and never see a public review link. Staff versions of the same pattern only hand a QR code to tables that smiled. Google's prohibited-content rules group this with fake engagement: discouraging or hiding negative reviews, or soliciting only positive ones. The operational checklist is in Google review guidelines for businesses. Paying for five stars is a separate violation; gating is the filter, not the bribe.
On 12 April 2018 Google published clearer rules against selective review solicitation. On 23 April 2018 Birdeye announced it had removed sentiment pre-checks from review requests so every customer could write on Google or another third-party site, whether they were a promoter or a detractor. The same update kept a separate private "contact us" option. Later in 2018 it restricted survey display logic that could send only some respondents toward public reviews. Podium states that it does not gate reviews and asks businesses to encourage genuine feedback without filtering by whether the visit was positive or negative. None of that means those companies "solved" one-star reviews. It means the public invitation is no longer reserved for fans.
Industry guidance in 2026 still allows a private satisfaction survey next to a Google invitation, as long as the invitation is offered to everyone regardless of the score. That is the difference between recovery and gating. You may ask for an honest rating, open a private note when the score is low, and still show a path to Google Business Profile. You may not hide that path because the score was a 2. Birdeye describes this as combining surveys or NPS-style questions with third-party review asks only when those asks go to all respondents. The same rule is in the ethical review generation checklist: treat a low score as an ops signal, not as a lock on the listing.
On a Review Revolution landing page, a high rating leads to a clear public review step. A low rating opens a private form so the business can follow up by email. Under that form, guests who still want a public Google review can use a smaller link to the same Google listing. They do not have to submit private details first. That is how the negative review filter stays a first step for recovery, not a wall. The how-to for placing QR codes and measuring conversion is in how to build a Google review funnel.
Platforms that invite every customer are not succeeding because they wiped criticism off Maps. They collect more genuine volume, they see dissatisfaction earlier, and they reply faster. Shoppers already discount a wall of perfect fives. A mid-to-high 4-star average with recent, mixed-but-answered reviews often converts better than a fragile 5.0. Use review analytics to watch themes, and reply in public when a guest does post. For why those public posts still belong on the profile, read why genuine negative Google reviews still belong on your listing.
A private form is recovery. Hiding Google from anyone who scored you low is gating.
Run a compliant review funnel with Review Revolution: honest ratings, private follow-up, and a Google path that stays available on the negative page. Compare approaches on our Birdeye comparison if you are choosing a stack.
